My name is Edi McGarry. I am a freshmen at San Clemente High and I have a wish. This August I am turning 16 and for my 16th birthday I am holding a surf contest. Oh no, not any surf contest, this contest is going to be huge. The contest is called where all the money that we make goes to the kids of The Make-A-Wish Foundation. The idea came to me one day when I was watching MTV's My Super Sweet Sixteen, and I was totally appalled by the behavior that came from these kids. With this, I wrote in my idea for the show. They loved it and said they would be in touch. I applied only to show that not all sixteen year olds are like the ones previously on the show and that there are kids in the world who want to make a difference. After trying to get confirmation on MTV putting me on the show, they changed their minds and decided that my idea would counter their whole perspective of Sweet Sixteen. |

| With this, I jumped back on my horse and said to myself, "No
big deal. It was not about being on TV in the first place, I tried to throw
a different idea towards MTV, they didn't like it, but that's alright. All
I want to do is give back to others who may not be able to turn sixteen".
So for the past two months I have been working with WSA
(Western Surfing Association) on my idea. They have helped me reserve
a spot for the contest which will be held August 5th, 2006 down at San Onofre
State Beach, Trail One with their event to be held the following day. The
"Surf With A Wish" contest will be a day full of fun, family oriented
activities. |

The day will start with the surf contest, raffles will be held throughout the day, and there will be hula dancers with Hawaiian and local music, which will fill the air. Local food will be donated for the contestants; there will be professional surfer "meet & greets", the award ceremony, and then its party on into the night in celebration of my sixteenth birthday. During the day of the contest, some professional surfers will be on hand to grant the wishes of children who wish to surf. We hope to raise as much money as possible for the children of Make-A-Wish in addition to granting the wishes of these brave and courageous children. We also hope to change the outlook on how California is portrayed through TV. Not everybody's rich, and many of those who aren't turn out to be better and stronger people in the end. So come on down August 5th to have a day full of fun and a day full of granting wishes! Oh... and let's show the world who the real Orange County is. |
